RESUMO

This paper offers an examination of the current plastic waste landscape, with emphasis on the nine countries of the European University Alliance E³UDRES2, based on both the literature and official numbers, to verify the alignment of practical waste management practices with scientific tendencies and advancements. The paper includes a bibliometric analysis focusing on the overall plastic waste literature and the plastic waste literature of the E³UDRES2 countries. Additionally, a mass balance was calculated regarding the domestic waste management of each of the alliance countries in 2021. The main goal is to assess how scientific research in the field of plastic waste management is being implemented in practice, particularly in the context of the E³UDRES2 countries. Bibliometric results reveal significant growth in publications since 2006, with China, the USA, and India leading. Key themes reveal evident clusters around behavior and technology, encompassing both the properties of plastics and societal attitudes toward waste management policy measures. Mass balance results reveal that, in the nine countries of the alliance, Latvia and Finland exhibited high plastic recycling rates (85% and 49%, respectively), and Germany, despite its high population, generated less waste per capita and incinerated 64% of its plastic waste. Despite progress, the results highlight ongoing challenges in implementing comprehensive circular economy-focused policies for waste management in Europe yet reveal a growing commitment to improving waste treatment systems, leading to lower environmental impacts of plastic waste.

RESUMO

Background: To facilitate the shift from risk-factor management to primordial prevention of cardiovascular disease, the American Heart Association developed guidelines to score and track cardiovascular health (CVH). How the prevalence and trajectories of a high level of CVH across the life course compare among high- and lower-income countries is unknown. Methods: Nationally representative survey data with CVH variables (physical activity, cigarette smoking, body mass index, blood pressure, blood glucose, and total cholesterol levels) were identified in Ethiopia, Bangladesh, Brazil, England, and the US for adults (aged 18-69 years and not pregnant). Data were harmonized, and CVH metrics were scored using the American Heart Association guidelines, as high (2), moderate (1), or low (0), with the prevalence of high scores (better CVH) across the life course compared across countries. Results: Among 28,092 adults (Ethiopia n = 7686, 55.2% male; Bangladesh n = 6731, 48.4% male; Brazil n = 7241, 47.9% male; England n = 2691, 49.5% male, and the US n = 3743, 50.3% male), the prevalence of high CVH scores decreased as country income level increased. Declining CVH with age was universal across countries, but differences were already observable in those aged 18 years. Excess body weight appeared to be the main driver of poor CVH in higher-income countries, and the prevalence of current smoking was highest in Bangladesh. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that CVH decline with age may be universal. Interventions to promote and preserve CVH throughout the life course are needed in all populations, tailored to country-specific time courses of the decline. In countries where the level of CVH remains relatively high, protection of whole societies from risk-factor epidemics may still be feasible.

Despite recognizing the detrimental impact of parental violence on children's mental and physical health throughout their lives, violence remains an all-too-real part of life for many children around the globe. However, data on the child-reported prevalence of experienced family violence are scarce and primarily based on parental reports. This study aimed to broaden the body of evidence and measure the lifetime prevalence of child-reported experience of violent disciplinary practices perpetrated by parents and to identify its associated sociodemographic and economic factors. We conducted a cross-sectional study using data from 5,281 Generation XXI participants recruited from 2005 to 2006 in Porto, Portugal. Parental disciplinary practices were reported by 7-year-old children using the Parent-Child Conflict Tactics Scale. Pearson's Chi-squared test was used to compare differences in child-reported frequencies of violent disciplinary practices by sociodemographic variables. We observed statistically significant differences in rates of violent disciplinary practices according to the child's and parent's gender. Specifically, fathers exhibited a higher likelihood than mothers to engage in psychological aggression and corporal punishment, while mothers were more prone to engage in severe and very severe physical assault. When fathers were the perpetrators, boys were more inclined than girls to report all forms of violent disciplinary measures, and when mothers were the perpetrators, boys were particularly susceptible to severe and very severe physical assault compared to girls. In our study, children reported being frequently subjected to violent parental disciplinary practices, independently of family socioeconomic background. Children were more likely to experience psychological aggression and corporal punishment if they were born into high-income families, while severe and very severe physical assaults were more common among children whose parents had lower educational levels. National public awareness of the negative effects of violent disciplinary practices is urgently needed, promoting child-friendly and nonviolent approaches to discipline.

RESUMO

We aimed to quantify the prospective association between bullying and physical pain in a population-based cohort of adolescents. We assessed 4,049 participants of the 10 and 13 years waves of the Generation XXI birth cohort study in Portugal. Pain history was collected using the Luebeck pain screening questionnaire. A subsample of 1,727 adolescents underwent computerized cuff pressure algometry to estimate pain detection/tolerance thresholds, temporal pain summation and conditioned pain modulation. Participants completed the Bully Scale Survey and were classified as "victim only", "both victim and aggressor", "aggressor only", or "not involved". Associations were quantified using Poisson or linear regression, adjusted for sex and adverse childhood experiences. When compared to adolescents "not involved", participants classified as "victim only" or "both victim and aggressor" at age 10 had higher risk of pain with psychosocial triggers, pain that led to skipping leisure activities, multisite pain, pain of higher intensity, and pain of longer duration, with relative risks between 1.21 (95% confidence interval: .99, 1.49) and 2.17 (1.57, 3.01). "Victims only" at age 10 had lower average pain detection and tolerance thresholds at 13 years (linear regression coefficients: -1.81 [-3.29, -.33] and -2.73 [-5.17, -.29] kPa, respectively), as well as higher pain intensity ratings (.37 [.07, .68] and .39 [.06, .72] mm), when compared with adolescents not involved. No differences were seen for the remaining bullying profiles or sensory measures. Our findings suggest that bullying may have long-term influence on the risk of chronic musculoskeletal pain and may interfere with responses to painful stimuli. PERSPECTIVE: We found prospective evidence that bullying victimization in youth: 1) is more likely to lead to negative reported pain experiences than the reverse, 2) may have long-term influence on adverse pain experiences, and 3) may contribute to pain phenotypes partly by interfering with somatosensory responses to painful stimuli.

RESUMO

This study focuses on the treatment of secondary urban wastewater (W) to improve the effluent quality aiming at the reduction of pathogenic microorganisms for the safe reuse of the treated wastewater (TW). Catalyst-free persulfate activation by radiation-based oxidation was applied as a treatment technology. A parametric study was carried out to select the best operating conditions. Total enterobacteria inactivation (quantified by the log reduction (CFU/100 mL)) was achieved when using [S2O82-] = 1 mM, pH = 8.5 (natural pH of W), T = 25 °C, and I = 500 W/m2. However, storing TW for 3 days promoted the regrowth of bacteria, risking its reutilization. Therefore, in this study, and for the first time, the potential beneficial role of inoculation of wastewater treated by the radiation-activated persulfate process with a diverse bacterial community was evaluated in order to control the regrowth of potentially harmful microorganisms through bacterial competition. For this, TW was diluted with river water (R) in the volume percentages of 5, 25, and 50 (percentages refer to R content), and enterobacteria and total heterotrophs were enumerated before and after storage for 72 h. The results showed total heterotrophs and enterobacteria regrowth for TW and R + TW diluted 5 and 25% after storage. However, for R + TW diluted 50%, only the total heterotrophs regrew. Hence, the treated wastewater generated by the oxidative process diluted with 50% river water complies with the legislated limits for reuse in urban uses or irrigation.

RESUMO

Aims: With the greatest burden of cardiovascular disease morbidity and mortality increasingly observed in lower-income countries least prepared for this epidemic, focus is widening from risk factor management alone to primordial prevention to maintain high levels of cardiovascular health (CVH) across the life course. To facilitate this, the American Heart Association (AHA) developed CVH scoring guidelines to evaluate and track CVH. We aimed to compare the prevalence and trajectories of high CVH across the life course using nationally representative adult CVH data from five diverse high- to low-income countries. Methods: Surveys with CVH variables (physical activity, cigarette smoking, body mass, blood pressure, blood glucose, and total cholesterol levels) were identified in Ethiopia, Bangladesh, Brazil, England, and the United States (US). Participants were included if they were 18-69y, not pregnant, and had data for these CVH metrics. Comparable data were harmonized and each of the CVH metrics was scored using AHA guidelines as high (2), moderate (1), or low (0) to create total CVH scores with higher scores representing better CVH. High CVH prevalence by age was compared creating country CVH trajectories. Results: The analysis included 28,092 adults (Ethiopia n=7686, 55.2% male; Bangladesh n=6731, 48.4% male; Brazil n=7241, 47.9 % male; England n=2691, 49.5% male, and the US n=3743, 50.3% male). As country income level increased, prevalence of high CVH decreased (>90% in Ethiopia, >68% in Bangladesh and under 65% in the remaining countries). This pattern remained using either five or all six CVH metrics and following exclusion of underweight participants. While a decline in CVH with age was observed for all countries, higher income countries showed lower prevalence of high CVH already by age 18y. Excess body weight appeared the main driver of poor CVH in higher income countries, while current smoking was highest in Bangladesh. Conclusion: Harmonization of nationally representative survey data on CVH trajectories with age in 5 highly diverse countries supports our hypothesis that CVH decline with age may be universal. Interventions to promote and preserve high CVH throughout the life course are needed in all populations, tailored to country-specific time courses of the decline. In countries where CVH remains relatively high, protection of whole societies from risk factor epidemics may still be feasible.

RESUMO

Graphitic carbon nitride (GCN) is an optical semiconductor with excellent photoactivity under visible light irradiation. It has been widely applied for organic micropollutant removal from contaminated water, and less investigated for microorganisms' inactivation. The photocatalytic degradation mechanism using GCN is attributed to a series of reactions with reactive oxygen species and photogenerated holes that can be boosted by modifying its physical-chemical structure. This work reports a successful improvement of the overall photocatalytic and electrocatalytic activities of the pristine material by thermal and chemical modification by a copolymerisation synthesis method. The copolymerisation of dicyandiamide as a precursor with barbituric acid strongly reduced photoluminescence due to the enhanced charge separation thus improving the catalyst efficiency under visible light irradiation. The material with 1.6 wt% of barbituric acid showed the best photocatalytic performance and electrochemical properties. This photocatalyst was selected for immobilisation on a conductive carbon foam, which promotes a higher electrochemical active surface area and enhanced mass transfer. This three-dimensional metal-free electrode was employed for the photoelectrochemical inactivation of two different microorganisms, Escherichia coli, and Enterococcus faecalis, obtaining removals below the detection limit after 30 min in simulated faecal-contaminated waters. This photoelectrochemical reactor was also applied to treat polluted river and urban waste waters, and the faecal contamination indicators were vastly reduced to values below the detection limit in 60 min in both cases, showing the wide applicability of this innovative photoelectrode for different types of polluted aqueous matrices.

RESUMO

Carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae represents a healthcare threat, already disseminated in the environment. This study aimed to compare the behaviour of a clinical and an environmental K. pneumoniae strain (multilocus sequence type ST147) harbouring the gene blaKPC-3 in water. The abundance of the genes phoE (specific for K. pneumoniae) and blaKPC-3 was monitored by quantitative PCR in urban runoff water and sterile ultra-pure water microcosms, aiming to assess survival, blaKPC-3 persistence, and the effect of the native water microbiota. In sterile ultra-pure water, the abundance of cultivable K. pneumoniae and blaKPC-3 gene did not change over the incubation period (8 days). In contrast, in urban runoff, the K. pneumoniae and the genes phoE and blaKPC genes decreased by up to 3 log-units. These results suggest that K. pneumoniae were outcompeted by the native microbiota of the urban runoff water and that the decay of blaKPC-3 gene was due to host death, rather than to gene loss. The study highlights that although native microbiota is essential to hamper the persistence of non-native bacteria, carbapenemase producing K. pneumoniae can survive in urban runoff water for at least one week.

RESUMO

Ovarian cancer is the seventh most common cancer worldwide in women and the most lethal gynecologic malignancy due to the lack of accurate screening tools for early detection and late symptom onset. The absence of early-onset symptoms often delays diagnosis until the disease has progressed to advanced stages, frequently when there is peritoneal involvement. Although ovarian cancer is a heterogeneous malignancy with different histopathologic types, treatment for advanced tumors is usually based on chemotherapy and cytoreduction surgery. CAR T cells have shown promise for the treatment of hematological malignancies, though their role in treating solid tumors remains unclear. Outcomes are less favorable owing to the low capacity of CAR T cells to migrate to the tumor site, the influence of the protective tumor microenvironment, and the heterogeneity of surface antigens on tumor cells. Despite these results, CAR T cells have been proposed as a treatment approach for peritoneal carcinomatosis from colorectal and gastric origin. Local intraperitoneal administration of CAR T cells has been found to be superior to systemic administration, as this route is associated with increased tumor reduction, a more durable effect, protection against local relapse and distant metastases, and fewer systemic adverse effects. In this article we review the application of CAR T cells for the treatment of ovarian cancer and peritoneal carcinomatosis from ovarian cancer.

RESUMO

A membrane ozone contactor, operated under continuous mode, was applied to promote the tertiary treatment of urban wastewater (UWW), targeting the removal of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs), bacterial disinfection, and toxicity reduction. This system relies on the homogeneous radial distribution of ozone (O3) in the reaction zone by "titration" through a microfiltration borosilicate tubular membrane, while the UWW swirls around the membrane and drags the O3 microbubbles generated in the membrane shell-side. The membrane is coated with titanium dioxide (TiO2-P25) and radiation can be externally supplied via four UV lamps. The ozonation tests were carried out with secondary-treated UWW collected in different seasons (winter and summer) and spiked with a mix of 19 CECs (10 µg L-1 each). For an O3 dose of 18 g m-3, the best performance was obtained by increasing the O3 concentration (maximum [O3]G,inlet of 200 g Nm-3) and decreasing the gas flow rate (minimum QG of 0.15 Ndm3 min-1), providing the highest ozone transfer yield (88 %) and, thus higher specific ozone dose (g O3 per g dissolved organic carbon). Under these conditions, removals >80 % or concentrations below the limit of quantification were obtained for up to 13 of the 19 CECs and reductions up to 5 log units for total heterotrophs and below the limit of detection for enterobacteria and enterococci. Tests including a UVC dose of 0.10 kJ L-1 enhanced disinfection ability but had no impact on CECs oxidation. After ozonation, the abundance of antibiotic resistant bacteria was reduced but not eliminated, and microbial regrowth after 3-day storage was observed. No toxic effect was detected on zebrafish embryos using a dilution factor of 4 for the ozonized UWW and when granular activated carbon adsorption was subsequently applied the dilution factor decreased to 2.

RESUMO

This longitudinal population-based birth cohort study aims to identify childhood adversity patterns over the first 13 years of life and to examine its association with health-related behaviours and outcomes in early adolescence. Using data from the Portuguese birth cohort Generation XXI, we performed latent class analysis to explore the underlying patterns of adversity from birth to early adolescence, using 13 adversity items assessed in five time points. Health-related behaviours and outcomes were evaluated at 13 years. Adjusting for parental unemployment, logistic regression models were performed to determine the association between adversity patterns and outcomes. Among 8647 participants, three adversity patterns were identified: "low adversity" (56.1%), "household dysfunction" (17.2%) and "multiple adversities" (26.7%). For the "household dysfunction" pattern, girls and boys showed associations with increased odds of alcohol/tobacco use (adjusted odds ratio [AOR]: 1.78; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.32-2.40; AOR:1.84; CI:1.38-2.46, respectively) and depressive symptoms (AOR:2.34; CI:1.58-3.48; AOR:5.45; CI:2.86-10.38, respectively). Boys also presented low consumption of fruits/vegetables (AOR:1.51; CI:1.04-2.19). For the "multiple adversities" pattern, both girls and boys showed an increased probability of alcohol/tobacco use (AOR:1.82; CI:1.42-2.33; AOR:1.63; CI:1.30-2.05, respectively) and depressive symptoms (AOR:3.41; CI:2.46-4.72; AOR:5.21; CI:2.91-9.32, respectively). Boys also revealed increased odds of low consumption of fruits/vegetables (AOR:1.67; CI:1.24-2.23). Childhood adversity patterns are associated with unhealthy behaviours and depressive symptoms in early adolescence. Public policies and early interventions targeting vulnerable children, families and communities can potentially reduce the detrimental effects of adversities on health and promote individual and community resilience.

RESUMO

In this study, a combination of coagulation/flocculation and Fenton processes was studied as tertiary treatment in order to generate treated water susceptible to reuse. The combination of both processes has never been applied in disinfection of real urban wastewater. The best removals of turbidity and enterobacteria were achieved when applying a coagulant (FeCl3) dosage of 120 mg/L and the natural pH of the effluent (7.14). The following Fenton reaction presented the maximal enterobacteria inactivation after 120 min at 25 °C, when using hydrogen peroxide and added iron concentrations of 100 mg/L and 7 mg/L, respectively. The abundance of antibiotic resistant (amoxicillin and sulfamethoxazole) enterobacteria and total enterobacteria, enterococci, and heterotrophs, and antibiotic resistance genes - ARG - (sul1, blaTEM and qnrS) was evaluated before and after each step of the treatment. Values below 10 CFU/100 mL were achieved for total and resistant cultivable enterobacteria immediately after treatment and after storage for 72 h, therefore meeting the strictest limit imposed for E. coli. Physico-chemical parameters also met the established limits for water reuse. Despite harbouring a rich and diverse bacterial community, the final stored disinfected wastewater contained high relative abundance of potentially hazardous bacteria. Such results point out the need of a deep microbiological characterization of treated wastewater to evaluate the risk of its reuse in irrigation.

RESUMO

Inconsistent information can be hard to understand, but in cases like fiction readers can integrate it with little to no difficulties. The present study aimed at examining if perspective switching can take place when only a minimal fictional description is provided (fictional world condition), as compared with general world knowledge (real world condition). Participants read sentences where food items had animated or inanimate features while EEG was recorded and performed a sentence completion task to evaluate recall. In the real-world condition, the N400 was significantly larger for sentences incongruent, rather than congruent, with general world knowledge. In the fictional world condition, the N400 elicited by congruent and incongruent sentences did not differ, confirming that the minimal description impacted online information processing. Information consistent with general knowledge was better recalled in both conditions. The current results highlight how contextual information is integrated during sentence comprehension.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT Objective The aim of this study was to evaluate whether the depiction of a fat body for health communication on the Instagram social network by the national societies governing obesity management present elements that enhance weight-related prejudice, with the slim body as a reference. Methods We investigated the last publication quintile, totaling 2,155 publications. A total of 72 images were included and 99 bodies were decoded. The bodies were classified according to positive and negative characteristics into four categories (body presentation, clothing, food and moving behavior) in which the negative characteristics have the potential to enhance the prejudice. The chi-square test was applied to test the difference in the proportion of bias elements associated with body weight between the fat body and the thin body. Results The fat body was more represented (p≤0.05 for all) headless (32.3% vs 9.2%), with bare abdomen (17.6% vs 0%), with a focus on the abdomen (11% vs 0% ), with tight clothes (32.3% vs 0%), sad expression (23.5% vs 6.1%), involved with food of low nutritional value (14.7% vs 0%) and in sedentary behavior ( 11% vs 0%) compared to the thin body. Conclusion National societies that govern management of obesity presented the fat body with more negative elements that enhance the prejudice associated with excess weight, which is an important public health problem.

Exposure to adversity during the first years of life might already be biologically embedded well before adult life. Thus, the impact of different stressful experiences needs to be explored. This study aims to examine if the association between being victimized (adverse childhood experiences-ACEs and bullying) and (hs-) C-Reactive Protein (CRP) is explained by the influence of adversity on the body mass index (BMI) of the child. We included children from the Portuguese birth cohort Generation XXI (n = 3712) that at 10 years of age completed a questionnaire on the exposure to ACEs and bullying victimization, assessed by an adaptation from the original ACEs study and an adaptation of The Bully Scale Survey, respectively. Following an overnight fast, a venous blood sample was collected by trained nurses and hs-CRP was assayed in fresh blood samples. Weight and height were measured with the child in underwear and bare feet. Weight was measured to the nearest one-tenth of a kilogram with the use of a digital scale (Tanita), and height was measured to the nearest one-tenth of a centimetre with the use of a wall stadiometer (seca®). BMI was calculated as the value of weight (kg) over squared height (m), and computed as an age- and sex-specific BMI standard deviation (SD) score (z-score), according to the World Health Organization Child Growth Standards (5-19 years). Regression coefficients and respective 95% Confidence Interval [ß(95%CI)] were computed using path analysis. We observed that ACEs had a positive total effect on hs-CRP at the age of 10 years (ß = 0.06; 95%CI: -0.02; 0.15). A direct effect (ß = 0.02; 95%CI: -0.01; 0.06) accounted for 66.1% of the association between ACEs and hs-CRP. A positive total effect of bullying victimization on hs-CRP (ß = 0.20; 95%CI: 0.06; 0.34) was observed. A direct effect (ß = 0.08; 95%CI: -0.05; 0.21) accounted for 40.0% of the association, while an indirect effect through BMI (ß = 0.12; 95%CI: 0.06; 0.18) explained 60.0% of the pathway between bullying victimization and hs-CRP. Results suggest that there might be different mechanisms involved in the biological embedding of childhood experiences. BMI seems to explain a great part of the association between exposure to bullying victimization and hs-CRP at 10 years of age. Further research is still needed to better understand the mechanisms explaining the emergence and persistence of health poorer outcomes later in life for victims of abuse.

RESUMO

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are a modifiable risk factor for diseases throughout life. This study estimates the prevalence of ACEs in children, addressing associated sociodemographic characteristics and examining the relationship of ACEs with the child's health and behaviors. We used information on 5295 participants at 10 years old, of the birth cohort Generation XXI, established in Porto, Portugal. Children answered a self-administered questionnaire on ACEs, based on the original ACEs study. Principal component analysis was used to group correlated ACEs, and a score was computed to assess their cumulative effect. Overall, 96.2% of children reported having been exposed to at least one ACE. The most prevalent ACE was a household member shouting, yelling, or screaming at the child (57.7%). Boys were more likely than girls to report "abuse", "school problems", and "death/severe disease". Low parental education, income, and unemployment were associated with an increased risk of "school problems", "death/severe disease", and "household dysfunction". We observed that the dimensions of ACEs could be identified at 10 years of age. A disadvantaged socioeconomic environment was associated with dimensions of ACEs. These data illustrate the natural history of dimensions of ACEs and their potential social patterning.

RESUMO

Latest advances in the field of cancer immunotherapy have developed the (Chimeric Antigen Receptor) CAR-T cell therapy. This therapy was first used in hematological malignancies which obtained promising results; therefore, the use of CAR-T cells has become a popular approach for treating non-solid tumors. CAR-T cells consist of T-lymphocytes that are engineered to express an artificial receptor against any surface antigen of our choice giving us the capacity of offering precise and personalized treatment. This leaded to the development of CAR-T cells for treating solid tumors with the hope of obtaining the same result; however, their use in solid tumor and their efficacy have not achieved the expected results. The reason of these results is because solid tumors have some peculiarities that are not present in hematological malignancies. In this review we explain how CAR-T cells are made, their mechanism of action, adverse effect and how solid tumors can evade their action, and also we summarize their use in colorectal cancer and peritoneal carcinomatosis.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Youth and young adults with pain conditions report having a history of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) more frequently than their healthy peers. The relationship between ACEs and pain before adolescence in population-based settings is not extensively researched. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between the history of ACEs and bodily pain at 10 years of age. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Cross-sectional analysis of 4738 participants of Generation XXI population-based birth cohort, recruited in 2005-06 in Porto, Portugal. METHODS: Study includes self-reported data on ACEs exposures and bodily pain (pain presence, sites, and intensity a week prior to the interview). Adjusted odds ratios (AOR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were obtained from binary and multinomial logistic regression analyses to estimate the likelihood of various pain features according to the extent of exposure to ACEs (i.e., 0 ACEs, 1-3 ACEs, 4-5 ACEs, and ≥ 6 ACEs). RESULTS: Prevalence of pain, multisite, and high-intensity pain a week prior to the interview increased with increasing exposure to ACEs. After controlling for sociodemographic characteristics, children who had experienced ≥6 ACEs were more likely to report pain [AOR 3.18 (95% CI 2.19, 4.74)], multisite pain [AOR 2.45 (95% CI 1.37, 4.40)], and high-intensity pain [AOR 4.27 (95% CI 2.56, 7.12)] compared with children with no ACEs. CONCLUSIONS: A dose-response association was observed between the cumulative number of ACEs and reports of pain in 10-year-old children, suggesting that embodiment of ACEs starts as early as childhood and that pain related to ACEs begins earlier than previously reported.

RESUMO

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by social cognition deficits, including difficulties inferring the intentions of others. Although deficits in attribution of intentions (AI) have been consistently replicated in ASD, their exact nature remains unexplored. Here we registered the electrophysiological correlates of a nonverbal social cognition task to investigate AI in autistic adults. Twenty-one male autistic adults and 30 male neurotypical volunteers performed a comic strips task depicting either intentional action (AI) or physical causality with or without human characters, while their electroencephalographic signal was recorded. Compared to neurotypical volunteers, autistic participants were significantly less accurate in correctly identifying congruence in the AI condition, but not in the physical causality conditions. In the AI condition a bilateral posterior positive event-related potential (ERP) occurred 200-400 ms post-stimulus (the ERP intention effect) in both groups. This waveform comprised a P200 and a P300 component, with the P200 component being larger for the AI condition in neurotypical volunteers but not in autistic individuals, who also showed a longer latency for this waveform. Group differences in amplitude of the ERP intention effect only became evident when we compared autistic participants to a subgroup of similarly performing neurotypical participants, suggesting that the atypical ERP waveform in ASD is an effect of group, rather than a marker of low-task performance. Together, these results suggest that the lower accuracy of the ASD group in the AI task may result from impaired early attentional processing and contextual integration of socially relevant cues. LAY SUMMARY: To understand why autistic people have difficulties in inferring others' intentions, we asked participants to judge the congruence of the endings of comic strips depicting either intentional actions (e.g., fetching a chair to reach for something) or situations solely following physical rules (e.g., an apple falling on someone's head), while their electrical brain activity was recorded. Autistic individuals had more difficulties in inferring intentions than neurotypical controls, which may reflect impaired attention and contextual integration of social cues.
